THE list of roads and footpaths due to be upgraded by the council in the coming year has been revealed.

Under the plans, improvement works would be carried out on some of the main routes through the city, including Tadcaster Road, Wigginton Road, Fishergate and Huntington Road.

City of York Council has published its planned highway repairs programme - which outlines proposed road and footpath maintenance works throughout the city to take place during the next year.

As part of the scheme, Marygate, Hetherton Street and Frederick Street would also be renewed and the paving on the footpath along Marygate would be repaired.

And conservation work will also take place on city centre foot ways along Church Street and Colliergate.

A report says: “City of York Council carry out a detailed survey of the whole of the council adopted highway network. The survey is then utilised to assess the condition of all parts of the network. With all this condition information we are in a good position to identify where we should direct our maintenance activities and develop the programmes of work.

“Further assessment will be undertaken to identify the impacts that have arisen from the freezing conditions during winter 2018/19."

The council also carries out reactive road repairs and a spokesman confirmed its aims to fix the worst potholes within 24 hours. As part of the proposals, £495,000 will be spent on renewing the natural stone in Stonegate.

Council documents say improvement work is also due to take place in Tadcaster Road between St George’s Place and The Horseshoe and in Fishergate between Escrick Street and Grange Street, as well as in Gale Lane, St Helens Road, Haxby Road, Audax Road, Hawthorne Grove, Mill Lane, Towthorpe Road, Bishopgate St/Fawcett St and Foss Bank/Heworth Green.

Details of when the work will take place have not yet been released. The council announced last month that £13.7 million extra will be invested in the highways budget during the next five years.
