A £3.9 MILLION scheme to improve a roundabout on the A1079 in East Yorkshire is set to cause motorists short-term inconvenience - but cut delays and congestion once completed.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council says work starts at the Shiptonthorpe roundabout on Monday April 8 and is expected to be completed by Christmas.

A spokesman said it would increase capacity by widening entry and exit lanes and providing a new 'fifth arm' on the A1079.

"The aim of the scheme is to reduce the delays and congestion that can form on the A1079 approaches to the roundabout at peak times and to cater for future traffic growth.," he said.

"The proposed fifth arm will allow traffic to bypass the existing accesses to McDonalds, the petrol filling station and the garden centre, therefore creating safer access and egress whilst maintaining through flow."

He apologised for any inconvenience caused but said working restrictions imposed should help minimise disruption.

Northern Powerhouse Minister Jake Berry said the project, backed by £3.12 million from the Government's Local Growth Fund, would improve traffic flow on a key York-Hull route, vital for freight access to Humber Ports.
