CITY Screen, York, will mark Mothering Sunday with a preview screening of Wild Rose, the new Scottish comedy-drama about mothers and daughters, well in advance of its general release on April 12.

In Tom Harper's musical drama, Jessie Buckley plays Rose-Lynn, a young Glasgow single mother who dreams of travelling to Nashville to be a country singer, when struggling to readjust to family life after a stint in prison.

Failing to connect with her two children, who openly prefer the company of their grandmother, Marion (Julie Walters), Rose-Lynn finds solace in covering her country music favourites, whether on the stage at her local club or while vacuuming the large house that she cleans to make money.

Can this unstoppable force of nature make it all the way to Tennessee? Whether tearing into a rip-roaring rendition of Chris Stapleton’s Outlaw State Of Mind or bringing out all the soul in Wynonna Judd’s Peace In This House, Buckley's Rose-Lynn silences any questions as to why she is so torn between her dreams and her responsibilities.

Buckley, by the way, is a trained musician and stage performer who stars in Wild Rose after her award-winning performance in last year’s thriller Beast and a BAFTA Rising Star nomination.

Dave Taylor, City Screen's marketing manager, says: "As we’re showing the preview for Mothering Sunday, our chef is organising a quintessential Mother’s Day afternoon tea with fruit scones, strawberry preserve and clotted cream, with a variation for breakfast involving croissants. Also, the Riverside Bar will have an offer on Prosecco throughout the day.”

Tickets for Sunday's 2.45pm screening of Wild Rose (12A) can be booked on 0871 902 5747, at picturehouses.com or in person at the Coney Street Picturehouse.
