A CHARITY is inviting elderly residents in Selby to join monthly social gatherings and help with tackle loneliness and isolation in the town.

Contact the Elderly, a national charity dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people, will holding monthly social events for people ages 75 and over, who live alone in Selby to enjoy a few hours of tea, cake and good company.

Last year, the charity supported over 6,000 older guests in 813 groups across the UK. It is supported by around 11,000 volunteers and 95 percent of the older guests that the charity helps say they now have something to look forward to.

Guests will be picked up by volunteer drivers and taken to a volunteer hosts home for tea, cake and conversation. The guests are welcomed by a different host each month, but the drivers remain the same which means that over the months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship.

Contact the Elderly’s Development Officer, Deb Meynell, said, “We know that there are many older people living alone in the Selby area for whom Sundays can be particularly long and difficult. These tea parties give people a chance to get together with others, make new friends, eat delicious cakes and enjoy a cup of tea.

“If you are over 75, live alone and would like to enjoy some tea, cake and company, please get in touch as we’d love to hear from you.”

If you would be interested in coming along to a tea party or you know someone who could benefit from attending, get in touch with the charity by calling 0800 716 543 or emailing deb.meynell@contact-the-elderly.org.uk
