THE Pasadena Roof Orchestra are celebrating 50 years of playing music from the roaring 1920s and elegant 1930s in 2019.

Their anniversary tour brings the veteran dance band to Selby Town Hall on March 31, led by Duncan Galloway in a night that combines delightful music and equally delightful tomfoolery.

The setlist will take in the songs of Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Jerome Kern, classic tunes from Louis Armstrong and sumptuous arrangements of Duke Ellington, Ray Noble and Fletcher Henderson.

The Pasadena Roof Orchestra invites you to "come along and listen to hits that were sung by Bing Crosby, Al Bowlly and Fred Astaire and take an opportunity to lose yourself in a bygone era as you enjoy a live dance band, all served up with a liberal dash of British humour".

The PRO was founded by John Arthy in 1969 when, as a young bandleader , he had the good fortune to discover 1,500 arrangements from the 1920s and 1930s lying dormant in an attic in Manchester.

Over the years, the orchestra has toured the United States five five times, recorded more than 40 albums and provided the music for Just A Gigolo, Marlene Dietrich's last film.

Next Sunday's 8pm show has sold out, alas, for those not quick enough off the mark.
