AS befits a biochemistry graduate, who released his debut album Veneer while at Gothenburg university, José Gonzales breaks down musical components into their simplest form while analysing the vital processes that pulse through living organisms.
After bouncing into our hearts with Heartbeats early last year, the Argentinean songwriter repeats the formula on ten more restrained acoustic songs in only 33 minutes. Latin rhythms meet Swedish precision in his rippling circles of guitar and double-tracked vocals, while the sombre Gonzales turns his focus from love to the trouble spots of human behaviour, in response to evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins's book The God Delusion.
If that sounds ominously heavy, his deft lyrical touch matches his finger-picking playing. Just add a fireside glow, sit back and let José lead you out of the darkness on the introspective winter nights ahead.
