DETERMINED Surfers Against Sewage volunteers defied appalling weather over the weekend to enlist Rhyl businesses to their cause.

A volunteer crew from the group took to the town centre, as the tail end of Storm Gareth lashed the coast, to spread the word about Refill in Rhyl.

They visited cafes, shops and other businesses to explain how they could become a 'Refill Station' by providing publicly accessible, clean and hygienic tap water free of charge.

Keith Jones, SASIR organiser said: “We already have national chains such as Costa, Starbucks, Premier Inn and Wetherspoons on board, but we were delighted to welcome ‘Coltman’s Rumblin’ Tum’ café and the ‘Rhyl Cats Protection’ shop on Bodfor Street into the scheme."

The national scheme is facilitated with a 'Refill' app available for smartphones and via the website refill.org.uk, which helps people find 'Refill Stations' where they can refill water bottles and avoid adding to 7.7 billion single use plastic bottles sold in the UK each year.

Businesses taking part will also have a window sticker to let passers-by know they are part of the scheme, using the app to refill a bottle also donates 13p to anti-plastic charity City to Sea from their corporate sponsors.

"It benefits the businesses as well, someone might go in to somewhere to refill their bottle and end up buying a bacon butty or staying for a coffee."
