I have no idea where Judith Morris (Our MPs are taking voters for idiots, Letters, February 27) obtains her figures, but it isn’t from an accurate fact file as the Government, manufacturing industry (all sizes), retail, farming and banking all state that leaving the EU without a deal will be an economic catastrophe.

As the boss of Airbus said this is not ‘project fear’, it is a ‘reality check’.

Official Government figures project that without a deal the UK economy will be six to nine per cent smaller in the next 15 years than it otherwise would have been.

At present we have tariff-free trade deals with 69 countries. Liam Fox, International Trade Secretary for more than two years, has so far managed to secure only six out of the 40 trade deals he claimed would be signed in the weeks after the referendum vote.

Official Government figures state that no deal customs checks alone could cost businesses a total of £13 billion a year.

The UK would be treated as a third country, which would include tariffs - 45 per cent on lamb, 10 per cent on cars etc.

We have no god-given right to be a thriving leading economy.

In a globalised world the UK, without an EU deal, will become a second rank, significantly poorer country.
