A YORK initiative is successfully turning back the clock for older residents, as well as re-iterating its message of inclusivity.

Tang Hall SMART, a CIC (Community Interest Company) based on the site of the former Burnholme Community College, has developed its work using music, media and technology to engage, build confidence and raise self-esteem and wellbeing.

Since October, it has been hosting monthly tea dances in The Centre@Burnholme, and they are creating "quite a buzz!", according to CEO Sue Williamson, who has also been inspired to start performing - alongside musical director, Neil Card - as retro musical duo Ernest and Suzy at both the dances and care homes.

In addition, Sue and Neil are also now running the choir formerly known as Vocal Flourish Choir - now called Flourish@Smart - which was set up in 2015, funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, as part of its Dementia Without Walls programme.

The pair have joined forces with support group United Response to build on the dementia-friendly choir's message of inclusivity and welcome people with learning disabilities.

Sue said: "There are loads of fantastic choirs in York. I think the unique point of ours is that it is more of an informal singing group, a bit of a sing-along, with the focus on feeling good through singing.

"We will do performances, but our chief priority is having fun."

The choir sings mainly popular songs dating from the 1930s-1960s, with a few modern classics thrown in.

Dances are generally on the last Saturday of each month. The next one is on March 23 from 1-3pm and features a double bill of Ernest and Suzy and Natasha Nostalgia and the Blue Rib-band.

Thanks to Heworth ward funding, tickets for the March dance cost just £1, including refreshments.
