AN INVESTIGATION into a stabbing that saw armed police on York’s streets on New Year’s Day has been closed - with no further action to be taken by police.

Three people were arrested after a 27-year-old man suffered stab wounds at a house in Swann Street, off Nunnery Lane, on Tuesday, January 1.

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance landed close to Scarcroft Primary School early on New Year’s Day, and North Yorkshire Police cordoned off a house and most of Swann Street following the incident.

Police said at the time that the victim suffered “serious injuries to his back”, which officers said were “believed to have been caused by a bladed weapon”.

Two people - a 31-year-old woman and a 36-year-old man - were arrested at the scene, and a 30-year-old man was arrested in Lowther Street at 4pm, following an armed raid by police.

Police dogs and the drone unit also took part in the afternoon raid, while residents and workers at the local Spar shop were ordered to close and lock their doors during the 45-minute incident, which was centred on Aberford House, and saw police cordon off a section of the road as a safety measure.

The three arrested people were later released on bail, and the stab victim was eventually discharged from hospital, but North Yorkshire Police said on Wednesday that the investigation had now been forced to close, as despite a man suffering stab wounds, no formal complaint had been received.

A spokeswoman for the force said: “Officers have explored all avenues of prosecution and have carried out extensive inquiries into this serious offence.

“However, no formal complaint has been received and without this and other pieces of vital evidence, we are unable to take a criminal prosecution further.

"To reassure members of the public, we believe that there was no threat to the wider community during or as a result of this incident.”
