I WRITE regarding recent letters from Dr Scott Marmion and Phil Shepherdson praising Michael Portillo.

I personally enjoy Mr Portillo’s informative train journey programmes, and I concur he would have made a perfect Tory Prime Minister.

Dr Marmion mentioned Question Time with its hysteria and nonsense.

Rewind the clock to January 17, 1989, when Portillo was the minister for public transport, bringing to the job all of the ingredients the good Dr Marmion mentioned.

He claimed nothing but good would come out of privatising the York, Derby and Crewe carriageworks - and to our cost we found out quite the opposite.

Yes, a perfect PM: he could waffle with the best of them and had no compassion whatsoever for the workers losing their jobs.

A true blue Thatcher clone devoid of any remorse to the damage he did to thousands of York families’ lives.

You Portillo worshippers have forgotten but thousands of Yorkies will never forget what the Tories and Portillo did in their quest to privatise anything they could.
