SHOPPERS in York have gone back in time to the 10th century when visiting a market organised as part of the Jorvik Viking Festival.

The market, held at the Merchant Adventurers Hall and the York Stained Glass Centre in Micklegate, features traders from far and wide selling hand-crafted weapons, jewellery, costumes and drinking ware.

The festival runs until next Wednesday, with a key highlight coming today when re-enactors face each other in combat in the Eye of York.

More than 200 Vikings will also take part in a march through the city centre to Coppergate today.

Other Viking attractions for visitors and residents include an encampment in Parliament Street, entertainment on a stage in St Sampson’s Square and sword-fighting workshops at Spark:York.

The festival is expected to attract about 60,000 Viking enthusiasts over the half term holiday.
