Fishguard Sea Cadets are getting ready to row, thanks to support from The Bluestone Foundation.

The cadets received a £2000 donation from the Bluestone Foundation which they used to buy a yole to help increase participation in sliding seat rowing, a sport growing in popularity.

“Sliding seat rowing is a huge growth area for the Sea Cadets," said Sub Lieutenant Chris Peake. "The great thing about the yole boats is that they can be one or two man vessels. We already had two yole boats at our base, but that’s hard to share between over 70 cadets.

“With this extra boat we will be able to give more of the young people who come here a chance to give the sport a go. Over the next few years we have ambitious plans to not only grow this sport in Fishguard, but to become a centre of excellence.”

Members of the Bluestone Foundation steering group were invited to the Sea Cadet headquarters in Fishguard to see the yole and meet the cadets who will be putting it through its paces.

Frank Atkins, chairman of the Bluestone Foundation said after the visit:

“We’re delighted to have been able to support the Fishguard Sea Cadets with the purchase of a second yole boat.

"Respect for the sea is very important when growing up in Pembrokeshire and the Sea Cadets do a great job in promoting this. We wish the group all the best of luck with their development plans.”

The Bluestone Foundation is the charitable arm of Bluestone National Park Resort. Since 2013, the foundation’s community fund has gifted over £140,000 to Pembrokeshire groups and projects.
