A MEMORIAL to a former York sub postmaster is to be created at a York church where he served as a church warden for decades.

St Lawrence’s Church in Lawrence Street wants to put up a plaque to Brian Fletcher as part of a £4,000 restoration project in the Lady Chapel.

A spokeswoman said Brian was church warden and treasurer from 1957 until his death almost a decade ago, and was also sub-postmaster of Walmgate Post Office for nearly 40 years.

He also won the public sector hero award in The Press’ 2004 Community Pride Awards.

“2019 is the 10th anniversary of his death, and we’re planning a memorial to Brian at St Lawrence church,” she said.

“We are refurbishing the Lady Chapel: decorating the walls, re-varnishing the floor, refurbishing the altar and the hangings, adding new candle sticks, and of course adding a plaque to Brian’s memory.

“He loved the church very much, and headed up its restoration appeal in the 2000s - we hope he would approve of our memorial to him. The project will cost £4,000, and we’ve so far had kind donations of £800 to Brian’s memorial.

“If people want to give money, they can send a cheque made out to “St Lawrence PCC”, to St Lawrence Parish Church, Lawrence Street, York, YO10 3WP, with a note saying it is for Brian’s memorial fund.”

Brian was nominated for a Community Pride award in 2004 by regular customer and friend Ken Butterfield, who said it was time his many years of service were recognised.

He said Brian had a regular customer base of OAPs and, if one of them failed to turn up, he popped round to their home to check they were OK and, as churchwarden, he put in a ‘tremendous amount of time’ collecting the elderly for church functions.
