IT was gratifying to read that when Bootham Crescent is developed, there is to be a memorial to the loyal, avid fans of York City Football Club whose ashes are buried in the ground - buried, not scattered, as we are told that scattered ashes can cause damage to the grass (Homes and memorial for Bootham Crescent, February 12).
It would seem such memorial is to be incorporated in a public open space, so at least it probably won’t be tucked away in some obscure corner of the development.
Hopefully there will be a seat for relatives and others to sit and contemplate, and if there should be a large plaque with the names of all the fans, that would be a fitting tribute.
The football club has all that information.
It would acknowledge the fervour those people felt about their football club and make possible amends for disturbing what they felt was to be their final resting place.
We hope the excavation of the ground will be carried out sensitively and with respect. No doubt time will tell whether they are happy or not.
