CLUBS, groups and community organisations based in York will be able to apply for reduced rates to hire York Barbican next year.

City of York Council is offering concessionary days as part of its lease agreement with the Barbican’s operators, SMG.

The authority wants to hear from interested organisations which would like to take up one of the two opportunities available in 2020.

To be eligible for a concessionary day, criteria for proposed events includes that they should provide activities or entertainment that appeal to a wide cross-section of the community; be open and accessible, and promote the council’s aims of residents having good quality opportunities and access to community facilities.

Priority will be given to events that have a high-quality programme, and engage communities.

The successful organisations won’t have to pay rental fees or charges for backstage and front of house facilities, technical equipment, front of house management or stewarding. The concessionary days will not cover items such as box office and credit card commission, marketing and additional staff for duties such as loading and unloading production equipment. Fund-raising events are not supported.

Councillor Nigel Ayre, executive member for culture, leisure and tourism, said: “The concessionary days offer a fantastic opportunity for local groups and organisations to perform in York’s largest entertainment venue. Please get your applications in early and we’re looking forward to receiving a wide range of proposals which will enhance York’s cultural scene for residents.”

Cllr Keith Myers, executive member for education, children and young people, said: “Past events have included inclusive events including Tang Hall SMART’s community gig, York Music Hub Festival featuring some 1,000 young performers, and the LGBT forum’s evening which celebrated diversity across the city.”
