Haxby Road, 1912. The large building on the right is Rowntree’s “new” (in 1912) dining block. In the distance is a white house with a spire. This is White Cross Villa, the one time residence of Samuel Haley, Chief Constable of York 1862-88, whose name is perpetuated by the adjacent street of Haley’s Terrace.
Presumably most of the men and boys gathered in the foreground are Rowntree’s employees - not many of them could have afforded to hire the Hansom cab in the picture. The trees on the right are part of Rowntree’s orchard.
