PASTY lovers will once again be able to get their fix as a popular bakers reopens today.

The Cornish Bakery, on Colliergate, will open its doors from 8am today, four months after the shop was forced to close following a fire.

Seven fire crews were called to the property on October 4 and Kings Square was cordoned off after the Cornish bakery stock room caught fire.

Four members of staff at the bakery helped evacuate the customers, and alerted neighbouring businesses Barnitts, and Your Move estate agents along with residential flats.

Fire safety and rescue crews later confirmed that the fire was started by an electrical fault.

The shop has been shut since, as repairs were undertaken in order to renovate the property.

However, the smell of pasties will return today as the Lord Mayor of York will be on hand to cut the ribbon and welcome back customers old and new.

Between 9 am and 11am customers are invited to attend the reopening of the shop and receive a hot drink and a Cornish bakery treat.

Founder of the Cornish Bakery, Steve Grocutt said that the company was very happy that the store was back up and running.

He said: “We are so happy to have Colliergate restored and back up to full operation for locals and new visitors alike.

“York is one of our favourite homes and we are delighted to have turned around the damage repair and renovations so swiftly.

“Once again we thank the great North Yorkshire Fire Service for its management of the fire and our team who evacuated the building in good time.

“I would also like to thank all of our neighbours and customers for their help and support following this unfortunate incident.

“Over the past four months we deployed our Colliergate team to our Coney Street bakery.”

Mr Grocutt confirmed that all previous staff members would be returning to work at the shop.

Tracey Swift, area manager, said: “We hope that we continue with the popular trade that we had before the fire.

“We welcome customers old and new to attend the opening today and enjoy one hot drink and one food item on us.”

Meanwhile, the company also announced that they would be trialling some new produce at their other store on Coney Street.

A spokesman for the company said: “The Cornish Bakery also has an exciting and innovative new menu that also offers a variety of pasty favourites including, the pork, apple and Cornish cider, the Thai chicken and the award winning Moroccan chickpea.”

Most recently, produce such as the traditional Cornish, the Cornish smoked haddock and the Moroccan chickpea won three awards at the World Pasty Championships.

All of the award winning dishes will be available at the newly opened store on Coney Street.
