FRAUDSTERS are sending fake emails claiming to be from City of York Council.
The scam messages purport to be about council tax refunds - but they are trying to trick people into sharing confidential data.
A spokesperson for City of York Council said: "Scammers are sending fake emails about a council tax refund, claiming to be from the council. We never email about refunds. If you’re concerned about an email, please call 01904 551550. If you have made any payments, contact your bank."
You can inform the police via ActionFraud on 0300 123 2040 if you believe you've been exposed to online scams, fraud or cyber crime.
The council spokesperson added: "Alternatively, if you're concerned someone is impersonating our staff or using the guise of City of York Council as part of any scam, report this to our Veritau team."
The Veritau team can be called on 0800 917 9247 or email counter.fraud@veritau.co.uk
