POLICE are investigating the death of a soldier following a crash at a North Yorkshire Army base involving a military vehicle.
North Yorkshire Police said a vehicle containing two military personnel overturned in what a spokesman called "a serious single-vehicle collision", at Gandale Camp, Catterick Garrison.
An Army spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that Staff Sergeant John McKelvie of The Scottish and North Irish Yeomanry died on 4 February while on duty. Our thoughts are with Staff Sergeant McKelvie’s family and friends at this difficult time."
The crash happened at just before 1pm on Tuesday, January 29, and the driver, a 51-year-old man, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to James Cook Hospital at Middlesbrough.
A police spokesman said: "Sadly, he died on February 4.
"A 30-year-old man, the only other occupant in the vehicle, suffered a suspected broken arm. He was taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment."
North Yorkshire Police said enquiries were "continuing to establish how the collision occurred".
