YORK'S Wigginton Road is expected to fully reopen tomorrow morning with part of it still closed after a "significant" burst to a water main.

Yorkshire Water said the burst caused damage to the road surface and has led to the full closure of Wigginton Road between Crichton Avenue and Vyner Street.

The closure has caused heavy traffic in the area.

This morning the company tweeted that it was working on repairs which may be causing houses in the area to have no water or low pressure. The repairs have since been completed, but the road still needs to be resurfaced.

A Yorkshire Water spokesperson told The Press: "The repair to the burst water main has gone well and we will be resurfacing the road this afternoon with a view to fully reopening Wigginton Road at around 6am tomorrow morning. We would like to thank local residents and motorists for their patience.”

The spokesperson added that work would go on through the night in a bid to get the road reopen by 6am.

The spokesperson had earlier said: "A traffic diversion is in place directing traffic heading into the city centre along Haxby Road. Traffic heading out of the city centre is also being directed along Haxby Road. Access to the hospital remains open."

York Travel, the official travel feed from City of York Council, tweeted this morning that Wigginton Road inbound traffic is being diverted across Crichton Avenue bridge, while Wigginton Road outbound access is possible up to the works area, but is otherwise being diverted along Haxby Road.

It also said this morning that it was "very busy" inbound on Bootham and Haxby Road/Clarence Street due to diverted traffic.

First York tweeted that there was "heavy traffic" around Clarence Street due to the Wigginton Road closure.
