WORK is underway to create a new racegoer facility at York Racecourse.

The project, which will cost a six-figure sum, will convert the ground floor of the existing Melrose Stand into the Premier Racing Lounge.

The project will see the transformation of a space that was previously a back of house area.

The lounge will have a capacity of up to 150 racegoers, who will have a reserved first class seat, a bar, betting facilities and exclusive toilets.

William Derby, chief executive and clerk of the course, said: “This exciting scheme makes a great use of premium space near the Parade Ring and I believe will bring an extra dimension to coming racing at York.

"The opportunity to reserve a seat in a well appointed racegoer facility in a prime location is new for racegoers outside hospitality."

The racecourse plans to open the lounge for the Dante Festival which starts on May 15.
