AN IMAGE of a new apartment block in York has been released by developers.

St John's Mews is a block of 29 one, two and three bedroom studios and apartments to be built on the site of the former Grove House care home in York.

The starting price for the apartments, from Caedmon Homes, Norstar Real Estate Group and marketed by Savills, is £160,000, with the first show home to be opened this month and the first completion expected in Spring.

Jamie Adam, head of new homes at Savills in the north, said the new development had "a contemporary look", with "large aluminium framed double glazed windows under a slate roof".

He said: "It is rare to find apartments within walking distance of the city centre which boast a gated landscaped communal garden and secure car parking and as a result, we anticipate high levels of interest, particularly from professionals and downsizers, when the scheme launches."

Paul Brown of Caedmon Homes, said: "We are extremely proud of this very exciting development, which will add to the excellent reputation of the Groves as one of the city’s most popular residential areas. We believe it will be especially attractive to first-time buyers, who are hoping to get a foothold on to the property ladder and to couples or people looking to downsize or retire.

"The development is clearly aimed at owner-occupiers. The affordability of the homes is a very important element of this project. With the Government’s Help to Buy initiative, we trust that a number of young professionals will be able to become home-owners for the first time."
