RESIDENTS have submitted a petition asking for their street to be made one way and to make the road narrower.

St John Street, off Lord Mayor’s Walk, has already been made narrower in a bid to slow down vehicles as they enter the road.

A report prepared for a council transport meeting on Thursday says an access only restriction was put in place on the street in the 1970s to try to prevent through traffic and commuters parking on a residential road. Work is now taking place to emphasize the restriction.

It adds that an investigation into changing the street into a one-way road could be carried out, but this is not recommended “because the practicality and impact on vulnerable road users of such a proposal has not been determined”.

Council transport bosses will instead be asked to monitor works, adding: “If it appears large vehicles are continuing to use the street as a through route, consider the feasibility of implementing no entry except for cyclists.”
