SIR DAVID Attenborough spoke with MP for York Central Rachael Maskell about plans to build homes next to Askham Bog.

The laturalist and broadcaster met Ms Maskell after he addressed Parliamentarians about the impact of climate change on the Polar Regions, and the impact on micro-climates within the environment.

Following the talk, Ms Maskell said Sir David "urged me to try and stop the proposed housing development adjacent to Askham Bog".

She said: "Having already met with the Wildlife Trust, there are many sites across York where development can take place, however any alterations to the environment surrounding the bog will have serious consequences for this Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

"Askham Bog is a favourite place for so many of us to visit and hosts some unique species. Changes in our climate are already impacting the site, but it is clear that any changes in the way the water flows could have a further detrimental impact on the bog. Once it has gone, we will not be able to get it back. Even with the housing developers seeking to put water diversions into their plans, this development will still have a negative impact. Domestic animals near the site will also change its character."

York Press:

Sir David Attenborough was shown around Askham Bog in 2016 by Alistair Fitter from the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust

Sir David visited the site in 2016 and raised concerns then about the possibility of new homes being built next to the site, which he called "irreplaceable".

More than 4,600 objections to the scheme were made through the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust's website, and as The Press reported last month, Sir David voiced his concerns about the plans.

He said: "I am so disappointed that this proposal for development had been made.

"York is exceptionally fortunate to have such a wonderful place within its boundaries. Why would anyone want to put that at risk?"

Ms Maskell said she acknowledged York "urgently needs affordable and social housing", but the proposed development in Moor Lane was "the wrong kind".

She said: "When you have such a renowned expert calling for a moratorium on this planning development on this site, those making the decision must heed such wisdom and evidence and reject this plan."
