STEPHEN Joseph Theatre Youth Theatre members will present Junkyard, an honest and witty teenage play by BAFTA Award-winning writer Jack Thorne, at the SJT, Scarborough, on March 1 and 2.

Thorne, whose writing credits include Harry Potter And The Cursed Child, This Is England ’90, Glue, Skins and Shameless, sets his story in 1979 when rubbish is on the streets and Fiz's life is tricky. She is 13, she has no money, her sister is pregnant and her mum reckons she is a waste of space.

Rick remembers how it feels to be a teenager, so when he decides to build a junk playground, he is pretty sure he has the charisma to encourage a bunch of reluctant youngsters to be involved. He is wrong.

Nevertheless, with some old-fashioned emotional bribery, Rick persuades Fiz, Higgy and Ginger to help him, whereupon the project turns from something that means nothing to something that means plenty. What's more, the youngsters that care about nothing start to care hugely.

Director Alice Kynman says: "Junkyard is a fun, heart-warming piece with great music and a cast of brilliant, talented young people." The music comes courtesy of her brother, Max Kynman, the show's musical director, while design is by Julia Wray and lighting design by Paul Stear.

Alice's cast comprises Megan Buttery; Saffron Cartwright; Mimi Clay; Christopher Dean; Tom Donoghue; Ruby Hilton; Lexie Kelly; Niamh Murphy; James Page; India Robertson; Hugh Stanway; Emily Swift; Harry Sykes and Barney Webster.

Junkyard can be seen in the Round at 7.30pm on March 1 and 2.30pm and 7.30pm on March 2. Tickets cost £10, £6 for under-30s, on 01723 370541 or at sjt.uk.com.
