GUY Fawkes, King Richard III and artist William Etty were all famous people with York connections nominated to be on the new £50 note, but weren't eligible.

Back in October, the Government announced plans for a new version of the note, to be printed in the UK, and nominations came in thick and fast for candidates to replace steam engine pioneers James Watt and Matthew Boulton who appear on the current £50?

The Bank received 174,112 nominations, of which 114,000 met the eligibility criteria.

There were over 225,000 entries, resulting in 989 eligible nominees who will be debated by a special committee.

The Overtake was able to obtain the list of the 4,617 ineligible candidates -  Among those who were nominated were several famous Yorkies - including St Peter's School old boy Guy Fawkes who planned the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605 and was put to death as a result, Yorkist king, Richard III, who maintained close connections with York throughout his life and York artsist William Etty, whose state is outside the city's art gallery.

Other famous people with links to York who were nominated include York astonomer John Goodricke and and the Roman emperor Septimius Severus lived in York between 208-11.

The Bank of England has also released a list of scientists who have been nominated to feature on the new £50 note.

On the list are computing pioneers Alan Turing and Ada Lovelace, telephone inventor Alexander Graham Bell and astronomer Patrick Moore.
