A PEDESTRIAN bridge across the River Ouse in York has been closed to make way for a £4 million replacement.

Scarborough Bridge, which links the railway station with the city centre and is used by more than 3,000 people every day, is to be removed and a new one put in its place in a  project expected to take until March to complete.

The new bridge will include a new path on the embankment allowing more than 3,000 users to cross the bridge directly from York Station over the new bridge into the city centre, avoiding roads.

It will also improve current access problems with ramps and external steps to the riverside paths, and a new, wider cycleway and footpath.

Commuters will need to take a different route to cross the River Ouse until the new bridge is installed.
