YORK residents have the chance to become tourists in their own city for the weekend, with free admission to scores of attractions and events.

The 24th York Residents Festival, organised by the tourism organisation Visit York, takes place on Saturday and Sunday.

Residents can enjoy more than 100 attractions, events and offers with a valid York Card or Student ID, said a spokeswoman.

She said the annual festival was Visit York’s way of saying ‘thank you’ for the warm welcome given by most residents to the city’s visitors.

“This year, there’s chance to explore behind the scenes at a number of venues not usually open to the public, plus some great dining and retail offers.”

She said attractions new to the festival included The Wizard Quest and The Grand Tour, although both these had already sold out.

A 13 foot train made of Lego train - a replica of a Grand Central Adelante train, made from about 30,000 bricks by Steve Mayes - also known as Lego architect Brickthis - will be on display at York Explore in Museum Street.

Some of the attractions and guided tours and some venues have limited tickets available so people are advised to plan visits in advance.Residents must show a valid YorkCard or York Student ID Card to gain admission at each venue and for all shopping and restaurant offers. YorkCards are available from Explore York Libraries.
