A TEAROOM in York could soon have a brand new look if plans are given the go-ahead.

The Little Shambles Tearooms plans to change its name to the Parlormade Cafe and Scone House, and has applied to City of York Council to refurbish upstairs rooms to expand the business in to a second floor.

Owner, Christopher Wilson, said that the renovation was to give the tearoom a new look and a fresh lease of life.

He said: “We are hoping to change the menu to add a bit more variation to our scones.

“In recent months we have advertised king prawn scones, Guinness and chilli scones so the renovation in design and the name help reflect that.

“The name helps reflect a tearoom that will appeal to all ages, and tourists, with a variety of choice for customers.

“Our new menu is slightly more experimental but this is a new market that we think can work in the city.

“York has many tearooms and we feel this will add a different option.”

The proposed renovation will include the ground floor, first floor and the new second floor.

Plans include a new kitchen, lighting and toilet facilities in the first and second floor and the installation of new walls on the new top floor that will allow further seating.

The application states that the existing café is over two floors and provides 26 covers but the top floor of the property is currently only used for storage.

The development will look to bring the second floor into use as a customer seating area, providing an additional eight covers, raising the capacity of the cafe from 26 to 34.

In the plans, it states that: “Careful consideration has been given to the heritage impact of the alterations when balanced against bringing a greater area of the

building back into use and ensuring that the café continues to makes a positive contribution to

the conservation area, local economy and offer to locals and visitors to York.”

Mr Wilson added that the Tearoom would remain closed throughout January, and February whilst renovations were on going.

He said: “We are slightly behind schedule however, we hope to open the fully refurbished by March.”
