A BRIDGE across the River Ouse in York will be closed to pedestrians and removed from this weekend.

Scarborough Bridge will close on Saturday, January 26, to allow the existing bridge to be removed and a new one to be put in its place, in works expected to last until March.

The new bridge will include a new path on the embankment allowing more than 3,000 users to cross the bridge directly from York Station over the new bridge into the city centre, avoiding roads.

The replacement bridge will also improve current access problems with ramps and external steps to the rvierside paths, and a new, wider cycleway and footpath.

The cost of the new bridge is £4 million, funded from central government grants bid for by the council over the past three years with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Enterprise Partnership.
