A COMMEMORATIVE plaque to the York Suffragettes will be unveiled in the city centre next week.

The plaque is being installed at 36, Coney Street - now occupied by The Entertainer toy shop but once the headquarters for the York branch of the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU).

The story of the Suffragettes in York was told for the first time in a 2017 community production Everything Is Possible, presented by Pilot Theatre and York Theatre Royal and featuring a company of 170 volunteers.

Since then Pilot and the Theatre Royal have been working with York Civic Trust to establish a permanent reminder of the suffragettes' achievements.

Juliet Forster, who co-directed the production with Katie Posner, said the play had a huge impact on York and would live a long time in the memories of those of us who made it and saw it, but 'especially in the wonderful women and men of contemporary York who brought this important York story to life.'

She said: “We are delighted that there will now be a commemorative plaque where the WSPU headquarters were on Coney St, as a permanent fixture for future generations to remember those women too.”

All are welcome at the plaque unveiling, which takes place at 10.30am on Wednesday January 30 at the shop.
