RESIDENTS are being asked to be vigilant after a man tried to get into a house in Tadcaster while pretending to be a police officer.

North Yorkshire Police said the man went to a house on Stutton Road on Friday at around 5.20pm requesting access to the property to fit cameras.

When he was asked for ID and refused entry, he made off, the force added.

He is described as well built, aged between 25 and 30 and well dressed.

A force spokesperson said: "If you have any uncertainty about the legitimacy of any council worker, businessman or tradesmen please contact the business or company direct to confirm their identity. They will not be offended. As always please report any suspicious circumstances to North Yorkshire Police on 101 or if you feel you are in immediate danger call 999."
