A YORK college has been marked in the top ten per cent nationally for progress at A-level.

York College has been recognised by data analysts Alps as achieving outstanding progress at A-level, putting the college in the top 10 per cent nationally compared to the A-level outcomes of 2,817 schools and colleges in the UK.

Hayley McQueen Curriculum Performance Manager for Academic and Applied Qualifications says: “This Award acknowledges that our students make outstanding progress in their A Levels from their GCSE starting point, as evidenced for example by two of this year’s students Nicola Merrett and Alfie Lamb.”

Coming from Tadcaster Grammar School, Nicola was already a very good student attaining As and Bs in all of her GCSEs, and at York College she grew into an exceptional student. Nicola impressively achieved an A* not only in Law, but also in Sociology and Psychology and her Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), which was about the Stephen Lawrence case. Nicola is now studying Sociology at Lancaster University.

Alfie joined the college from Manor C E Academy. He had a collection of GCSEs at grades Bs, Cs and Ds and at the end of two years he had achieved Bs in A Level Business Studies and Computer Science, and a D in Maths as well as an A in his EPQ. Alfie is a train enthusiast and for his EPQ he chose to study “Whether HS2 should get the green light?” He is now studying Accounting and Finance at Liverpool, John Moores University.

Glyn Jones, vice principal for academic and applied at York College said: “This recognition from Alps reflects the hard work and passion for their subjects which our tutors and students have shown over the last three years. It means our students have made outstanding progress during their time with us, and I’m proud we’ve helped them to move on to great destinations.”
