AN organisation that promotes independent businesses in York is set to be given £10,000 of funding by the council.

Councillors recommended that Indie York, which publishes a map of independent shops, galleries and cafes and supports business owners, be given the money to help develop the project. A report prepared for a City of York Council meeting says the organisation has nearly 200 members and is financed through a £50 annual membership fee.

Simon Brereton, head of economic growth at the council, said there is a “cluster” of traders’ associations in the city which could be strengthened by providing funding to Indie York.

Cllr Danny Myers added: “I think that’s an absolute must. £10,000 from the council represents amazing value for money in terms of the objectives to have a greater independent sector in the city centre and in the city as a whole.”
