SNOW has started falling in North Yorkshire and York today after temperatures plunged overnight.

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service station manager Tony Walker has tweeted a video of snow falling in Scarborough, adding: "Winter has arrived here in Scarborough. Please take care when driving.

"Be that friendly neighbour and keep an eye on elderly or vulnerable residents."

A light snow shower also reached York by just after midday but is not expected to become heavy.

Some of the heaviest snow has fallen in Ryedale, in villages such as Harome near Helmsley.

Forecasters say there will be more wintry showers today, particularly towards the coast, but will die away this evening with another widespread frost tonight.

Tomorrow will be mainly dry with some hazy sunshine but a chance of some rain, sleet and snow tomorrow night and on Saturday morning. Light snow is also currently being forecast for York next Tuesday.
