A YORK company has been selected by major rail companies to provide a new way to reduce delays.

Incremental Solutions designs and creates smart transport systems, and was recently chosen by Network Rail and GWR to create a prototype a new Overhead Line Equipment monitoring system.

The system will be used to identify problems which could affect the interface with overhead power cables, and aims to minimise delays to passengers on services which could be affected by problems with the OLE.

Daniel Lee-Bursnall, commercial director, said the new project used algorithms created by Oxford University academics to measure the movement of equipment on top of each train, plus machine learning and analytics provided by Incremental through its GPS monitoring system to adjust cable heights and tensions and help improve rail regularity.

He said: "We’re very pleased to have been awarded this project after a competitive tender process. It really demonstrates our credentials within the technology and transport sectors, and it’s a pleasure to work alongside like-minded companies to ensure this project is delivered.

"The OLE system is very representative of what Incremental Solutions is capable of in terms of using technology to make the rail network function in a safer and more effective way."

Using special cameras and computer technology, data will be analysed to look at trends and patterns for different trains, routes and connecting overhead cables.

The system will then inform Network Rail and GWR of locations they need to investigate, and, if necessary, take action before a failure occurs.

The OLE prototype will be trialled on Network Rail’s western route with the aim of being rolled out nationally if successful.
