CHILDREN and youth choirs from across York are being given the opportunity to perform alongside royal wedding performers, The Kingdom Choir.

The gospel group who performed the song ‘Stand By Me’ at Prince Harry's wedding last May, are inviting York choirs to perform with them at the Barbican later this year.

The choir, founded in 1994, is a group of male and female singers from London who’s songs primarily focus on aspects of Christianity.

Conductor Karen Gibson, said they want to help inspire the next generation.

She said: “Being part of the royal wedding was such an honour and we were delighted to be part of such a prestigious national day of celebration.

“As we tour the UK in 2019, we can’t wait to meet people across the country – especially young singers.

“Last year was like an un-dreamt dream – one that you wouldn’t even consider, because you never thought it could happen to you. We want to share our experience and dreams, and hopefully inspire a new generation of singers.”

Mrs Gibson, who originally founded the group said that the Royal Wedding performance was the largest audience the group had ever performed to, as over 2 billion people worldwide tuned in to watch the wedding.

She said: “Prior to performing in front of almost two billion people at the royal wedding, the largest audience The Kingdom Choir had performed to was just 200 people.

“It was an amazing experience and hopefully we can inspire the choirs in York to aim for similar success in the future.

“We are dedicated to creating a sound that demonstrates the community they share through their warm energy and enthusiastic performance.”

The choir is scheduled to perform at the Barbican on May 8.
