Jim McGurn reports unexpectedly losing control of his bicycle while negotiating the corner outside Wetherspoons (Cyclists beware of slippery surface, Letters, January 10).

I have had exactly the same experience nearby on the 180-degree turn on the gyratory outside Mecca Bingo in Fishergate.

I am a lifelong, highly experienced cyclist and I do not take risks.

The road was clean and dry, I was riding at what normally would be considered a safe speed and I wasn’t braking at the time.

So I was astonished when my front wheel slid from under me two thirds of the way round the corner.

Thankfully, I didn’t break any bones and the car I fell in front of managed to stop in time, but the fall hurt and the scars have lasted.

My experience, when combined with those of Jim and his colleagues, strongly suggests a potentially life-threatening defect in the road surface in this area, the like of which I have not seen anywhere else in York.

I would urge the council to resurface these two bends before someone gets killed on them.
