TRANSPORT bosses are being asked to approve a new safety scheme at a junction where six accidents have taken place in three years.

City of York Council is hoping the measures will make the mini-roundabout at the junction of York Road and Eastfield Avenue in Haxby safer.

A report says there were six crashes at the site between the start of 2015 and the end of 2017 - five of them involving cyclists. Three were caused by car drivers failing to give way.

It adds that visibility at the junction may be an issue.

Under the plans, road hump warning signs would be removed to improve visibility and the cycle lane on York Road leading up to the junction would be made straighter. Give way signs will be moved into more visible positions and road markings would also be renewed.

And some of the cycle markings will be removed to stop cyclists from staying too close to the kerb and encourage them into a position where they can be seen by drivers.

The report says: “On approach to the junction, there are numerous signs, lamp columns, and telegraph poles and these can make it difficult to see approaching cyclists from the give way line.

“These measures should serve to make the roundabout safer for all road users, but cyclists in particular should benefit from the changes.

“Excessive vehicle speed has not been listed as a contributory factor to any of the accidents at this location.”

The works are expected to cost £7,000 in addition to the £1,000 cost of investigating and planning the scheme.

The proposals will be discussed at a meeting of the executive member for transport at West Offices on Thursday.
