A WASTE treatment facility dealing with rubbish from York and North Yorkshire homes has been shortlisted for a national award.
Allerton Waste Recovery Park (AWRP) is shortlisted in the annual LGC Awards, which aim to recognise innovation and service delivery in the local authority sector.
The award winners will now be announced at an event in London in March. Amey operates AWRP on behalf of City of York Council and North Yorkshire County Council. The three organisations are jointly shortlisted in the environmental services category.
Amey’s Chris Murphy said: “This is fantastic recognition and we’re delighted to be shortlisted in this category, which aims to recognise local authority excellence in delivering environmental services.
Cllr Andrew Waller, executive member for the environment at City of York Council, added: “AWRP is reducing the amount of household waste going to landfill in the county by 90 per cent. Diverting this waste away from landfill, in addition to digesting food waste, means we can use it to generate enough energy to power the equivalent of 40,000 homes.”
