Gig of the Week
Please Please You presents Rozi Plain, The Fulford Arms, York, January 18
WHEN singer-songwriter Rozi Plain upped sticks from her hometown of Winchester, she settled in the West Country capital of Bristol. Here, she took musical inspiration from her job painting the ferries that bob along the city's main river artery, the Avon.
Together with her older brother Sam, alias Romanhead, and her friend Rachael Dadd, she was a founding member of the Cleaner Records collective, a loose assortment of musicians based in Bristol.
Now based in London, she crafts plucky songs that capture life's ephemeral nature, each one a beautiful snapshot of fragility, intimacy and gentle melody.
She has toured across Britain, Europe and the United States and, along the way, she has traversed countries and continents with like-minded luminaries Devendra Banhart, KT Tunstall, James Yorkston and Viking Moses, as well as making many appearances at festivals such as Green Man and End Of The Road.
A BBC 6 Music favourite, Rozi has performed numerous live sessions for Marc Riley and Lauren Laverne. Whether playing alone or with an assembly of her regular musical allies, from François & The Atlas Mountains and This Is The Kit to Rachael Dadd and Being There, her uncluttered songs and hooks create a blissful, singular voice.
Rozi, by the way, is a touring member of This Is The Kit. Wait and see whether her York show at the Fulford Arms for Independent Venue Week will be with musical compadres or plain Rozi.
Tickets cost £8 at pleasepleaseyou.com or in person from Earworm Records in York and Jumbo Records in Leeds or on the door from 7pm.
Rozi also plays Leeds Brudenell Social Club on February 3.
