THE Dante String Quartet will give the Cathedral Concert Society’s opening concert of 2019 in the quire of Ripon Cathedral on January 14.

At 7.30pm, they will play works by the two masters of the quartet, Haydn and Beethoven, as well as Smetana’s First Quartet, written as an autobiographic tone poem after he had gone deaf.

In a note to accompany the quartet, Smetana wrote: "My intention was to paint a tone picture of my life. The first movement depicts my youthful leanings towards art, a Romantic atmosphere, the inexpressible yearning for something I could neither express nor define, and also a kind of warning of my future misfortune."

The Dante Quartet, who are known for their imaginative programming and impassioned performances, enjoyed a tour of Japan last year.

Roger Higson, the concert societychairman, says: "We're in for a treat when we join the Dante as they take us on a journey through three very different works. I'm particularly looking forward to their interpretation of Smetana’s intimate and introspective quartet."

Tickets are on sale at riponconcerts.co.uk, the Ripon Cathedral gift shop, the Little Ripon Book Shop, Harrogate Theatre and the Tourist Information Centres in Ripon, Harrogate and Knaresborough, as well as on the door .
