Sad to read in The Press that Maude & Tommy, the shop in Grape Lane selling ethical women’s clothing, is to close (Ethical fashion shop set to shut, January 3).
This is a truly unique shop, whose national profile has done much to reinforce York’s specialist retail appeal.
York needs all the shops it can get at the moment but especially the individual shops selling the unusual and quirky.
It is these which do much to attract shoppers from other towns, who then support retail in the city as a whole.
