From the experience of many hours spent waiting for strike-bound British Rail trains I feel qualified to comment on the proposal to renationalise the rail network (Is it time to renationalise our railways? The Press, January 7).

Funds for investment have to come from the Treasury.

In a contest for cash between the railways and NHS, who would win?

In the past it was seldom the trains.

The railway unions have always been recalcitrant irrespective of who was in government.

To give them the power again to shut down the whole network strikes me as most irresponsible.
