FREE Wi-Fi could be rolled out at the new community stadium, Clifford’s Tower and the Coppergate Centre.

City of York Council leader Cllr Ian Gillies will be asked to approve plans to spend £250,000 on installing a network at the stadium and a further £58,000 for free internet at the city centre venues.

A council report says if the proposals do not go ahead, it will lead to a “poorer visitor experience” for people coming to the city.

Documents say time is “very tight” for installing Wi-Fi at the new community stadium before wiring begins on the East stand.

And if the network must be installed later it is likely to cost significantly more.

Cllr Ian Gillies said: “The proposed Wi-Fi expansion is yet another initiative to grow York’s digital offer as a super connected city.

“It’s good to see York’s digital infrastructure benefitting our residents with free and safe access to connectivity which we all use in our day to day lives.”

Cllr Keith Aspden, executive member for economic development, added: “It is incredibly important to residents and businesses that they are connected to the city’s digital infrastructure.

“This proposal, if approved, will expand York’s free Wi-Fi and help encourage greater investment to York, which will in turn benefit our communities and businesses alike.”

The report adds that the council will explore other opportunities to provide Wi-Fi in some schools.

And the authority is also looking at bringing 5G coverage to the city.
