NEW pocket parks could be installed in neighbourhoods across York.

Under council plans, small green spaces would be cleared up, with benches and bins added, to create restful and relaxing areas.

Cllr Keith Myers (Conservative, Acomb) asked councillors to discuss the proposals at a meeting on Thursday.

He said: “There are a number of areas in all our wards which could, for very little money, be utilized to form pocket parks.

“This could help with issues like social isolation and mental health - all of these issues which we know are a major challenge for our society. Just a couple of benches and a waste bin, maybe a couple of trees, is all that’s needed to create the smallest pocket park.”

He suggested Bar Lane, Lord Mayor’s Walk and Fishergate Bar as areas where the first pocket parks could be installed. And he said part of the new station development could also feature a small garden.

He said: “We were well aware that money is tight. We also recognise that not all open land can be preserved. But I hope that with a little effort and not too much expenditure this motion could be developed into a programme which could benefit all areas of York.”

Cllr Lars Kramm (Green, Micklegate) welcomed the plans and called for funding to be set aside for the scheme.

He said: “Any additional costs to council budget should be weighed against the benefits and social value of improving and maintaining a specific green space. If we can afford to invest millions in acquiring property portfolios then surely we should also be considering the social value of actively protecting green spaces.” The plans were unanimously backed by councillors.
