City of York Council to reveal plans for no deal Brexit

Councillors will be given an update on work taking place to ensure York “is as prepared as possible” in the event of a no-deal Brexit, at the Executive meeting on Thursday, December 20.

While the Government’s plan remains unclear on Brexit, and the Prime Minister has said a no-deal scenario was unlikely, council are being encouraged to prepare for all eventualities ahead of March 2019.

To date, the council said is has been working on consultation and dialogue with partner agencies across the city and region, “increasing discussion with central Government departments and trying to make sure up to date information is available”.

The council has also been reviewing 106 technical notices shared by the Government to focus on areas that would directly affect the authority and the city.

Cllr Ian Gillies, council leader, said: “We are continuing work with partners across York and the region so that both the council and the city can move forward confidently should there be a no deal Brexit.

“Our focus continues to be on ensuring the wellbeing of our residents, reducing uncertainty for businesses and communities wherever possible and mitigating the immediate impacts of a no deal outcome. This report helps us understand any changes a no deal Brexit would bring so we can address issues and take advantage of any opportunities.”

Deputy leader Cllr Andrew Waller said: “The implications of Brexit continue to remain unclear and uncertain. That is why we are working to ensure contingencies are in place for the city should the country leave the EU with no deal and sharing this information with our partners.The key part of this work is ensuring the wellbeing of residents and businesses. This report looks to prepare us for and mitigate the impact on the city should there be a no deal Brexit.”
