LION sculptures could be installed throughout York as part of a temporary art trail.

Destination management company Make It York is considering plans for a sculpture route through the city in the spring of 2020.

At a council meeting, the managing director of the organisation Steve Brown said lions could be chosen as the basis of the project because there are five lions on the York coat of arms.

He said: “As a historical tie-in we could create a story around that. We sent somebody down to Brighton last week to look at what they were doing, because they were doing something very similar and attracting massive attention.

“At the end you do a big auction and I think Brighton raised £231,000 which went to charity.

“So we're looking at maybe working with York BID and St Leonard’s Hospice.

“It's their 35th year in 2020 and putting on a really powerful trail that gets lots of people here and gets a lot of people interested and then at the end of it raising lots of money for the hospice.”

But he said the project is still very much a “work in progress”.

A report says the route would be modelled on the Manchester bee trail, which saw more than 100 individually designed giant bees positioned across the city.
