CAMPAIGNERS calling for a 'People's Vote' over Brexit are to stage a vigil outside York Minster on Tuesday evening.

Meetings have also been happening in York over this weekend, timed to coincide with initiatives by more than 100 pro European groups in towns and cities across the country ahead of Tuesday's crucial Parliamentary vote on the Prime Minister's Brexit deal.

York for Europe campaigners with stickers and leaflets hae been setting up their stall at a series of public meetings in York organised by York Central MP Rachael Maskell, including one at 2.30 pm today in Holy Trinity Church, Heworth, and another at 4pm tomorrow at the Gateway Church, Acomb,

Supporters from York and North Yorkshire are travelling to a major People's Votes rally in Sheffield this evening and York for Europe will also be staging a vigil outside York Minster from 5.30pm on Tuesday.

Martin Brooks, of York for Europe, said:"This will be one of the most important actions since the referendum itself. Now that people are coming to understand the implications of Brexit - and now that we've seen exactly what the Prime Minister is offering - all the indications are that people in York and North Yorkshire support having another referendum."

He said that earlier this week, a petition signed by more than a million people - including thousands collected over the summer in York and North Yorkshire - was hand delivered to 10 Downing Street by leading People's Vote campaigners Caroline Lucas MP and Chuka Umunna MP.
